There
are several types of programs available on the Internet for free.
One type is called Open Source software. These are programs developed
and updated by groups or communities of programmers for their own
use. They often license it under the Open Source category which
allows anyone to download it and install it free of charge. Of course
there is no technical support other than corresponding with the
developers or other users online.
Another
type of free program is called freeware. These are programs written
by individuals or companies and made available for free, often to
